A showcase of art from Native Art Renaissance Gallery

Based in New Westminster, BC, Native Art Renaissance Gallery celebrates the rich cultural heritage, creativity and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous artists from across Turtle Island.

The gallery brings together a diverse collection of handcrafted works, including traditional and contemporary carving, painting, jewellery and beadwork. Working with both emerging and master artists, Native Art Renaissance Gallery provides a space for artists to share their stories, traditions and unique perspectives through their work.

Beyond its gallery on Carnarvon Street, Native Art Renaissance Gallery participates in community events throughout the year, creating opportunities for Indigenous art, storytelling and cultural connection to be shared with wider audiences.

This showcase offers a glimpse into the artists and works represented by Native Art Renaissance Gallery, inviting viewers to experience Indigenous creativity and perhaps begin or continue their own journey as art collectors.

Ryan Hughes is a Coast Salish artist and carver from Snuneymuxw First Nation, currently based in Surrey. His multidisciplinary practice blends wood carving, digital art, painting, shading and colour, combining traditional Coast Salish design with contemporary approaches.

Growing up in a large urban Indigenous community, Ryan’s work is informed by his lived experience and journey of cultural reconnection. He shares Indigenous teachings through his art while continuing to develop his practice.

Ryan is particularly passionate about creating work that connects with and inspires Indigenous youth. Through carving, public art and community projects, he hopes to encourage the next generation to embrace their culture, creativity and connection to community.

 

KC HALL

KC Hall is a Heiltsuk artist born in Bella Bella, British Columbia, and raised in East Vancouver. The grandson of hereditary Chief Irene (Wakas) Brown, KC developed a passion for illustration, lettering and graffiti from a young age.

In 2012, KC studied Northwest Coast formline under Nisga’a artist Robert Tait at Native Education College in Vancouver. He began combining traditional Indigenous visual language with contemporary graffiti, developing a distinctive style rooted in both culture and urban art.

KC’s work explores Heiltsuk culture and identity through bold colour, intricate formline and contemporary design. His murals, paintings and public art can be found throughout British Columbia and beyond.

 

JAMES GROENING

Everything Under the Sun

James Groening, also known as Blue Sky, is a Cree artist and member of Kahkewistahaw First Nation, based in British Columbia. Adopted by his white grandparents during the Sixties Scoop, James grew up disconnected from his Indigenous heritage. Reconnecting with his family and culture later in life inspired a journey of healing and cultural rediscovery through art.

Working primarily in the Woodland style, James creates vibrant paintings inspired by traditional stories, legends, plants and animals. Influenced by artists including Norval Morrisseau, his work uses colour and symbolism to share cultural teachings.

James is also the founder of Native Art Renaissance Foundation and Gallery, supporting Indigenous artists and creating opportunities for cultural learning, storytelling and connection.
